The photos shown here were taken on May 25, 1905, some 100 years ago
when there was Ching Dynasty in China. (Remember the movie called
"The last emperor"? That was the time.) A man committed a crime for
murdering a royal family member. He was first sentenced to death by
"lighten the heavenly torch" (burn to death), but the emperor
thought it would be more "human" to just cut him to death. This
cruel penalty was called "Ling-Chi", the person would be cut live
then slowly die, the executioner had to avoid the primary blood
vessels so the poor guy would not die too quickly from bleeding (if
the man died too quickly the executioner might receive a death
penalty too!). The record showed some of this penalty might last 20
days before the person punished died
